When I first realized to box, I practiced my punches from each stances. However, when I first began sparring for some purpose I simply naturally wished to remain in a southpaw stance. As I got extra comfy sparring as a southpaw I switched completely, training every little thing as a southpaw. I use the orthodox stance just because it feels extra comfy, I like jabbing with my left and having my proper hand slightly behind.

You need to have the ability to step into a southpaw stance and move proper too, and be confident that you can defend and do harm from the southpaw stance. You want to be able to struggle both proper and left handed. I broke my proper arm in a MMA fight, and managed to win it by having the ability to end with the left.
